Thyroid gland and its role in infertility
The
butterfly-shaped gland is located in the front of the neck, known as the
thyroid. The main function of the gland is to produce and regulate hormones
that help your bodywork. If it does not produce an adequate amount of these
hormones, It can also cause problems during pregnancy itself. Thyroid hormone
can impact fertility too such as disruption of the menstrual cycle, difficult
to conceive, Interference with ovulation, premature birth, stillbirth and
increased risk of miscarriage.
The gynae
at the Best Fertility Centre in Delhi says,
‘Once the thyroid is under control, there is no reason why you should not have
a successful pregnancy and a healthy baby.’
Thyroid
hormones are so important to your baby's brain and nervous system development,
hypothyroidism, especially during the first trimester can cause low IQ and
problems with normal development.
Thyroid
issues are also commonly diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) as
both involve abnormal hormone levels. For women who get a diagnosis and treatment
then their balanced hormones lead to significantly improved chances to have a
baby.
Also in men
thyroid can lead to a variety of fertility issues - reduced sperm volume and
motility, Sperm defects, a lower libido, problems in erection, and lowered male
fertility hormones such as testosterone, luteinizing hormone (LH) and
follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH).
If you have
thyroid issues, it is best to precede a complete thyroid panel. If you are
pregnant and have Graves’ disease it is important to tell your obstetrician at Best IVF Clinic in Delhi. After knowing about your
medical history she can start the treatment. In this case, you can expect to
have regular check-ups throughout the pregnancy.
