Who Needs IVF?

Do you know who requires IVF? One of the most effective treatments for infertility is in vitro fertilization. In 1978, Louise Brown, the first IVF baby, was born in England. IVF has been capable of the birth of over a million babies worldwide since then. In fact, IVF accounts for 1% of all babies born in the United States and 5% of babies born in Europe.

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is almost certainly near the top of your list of commonly used fertility treatments. This is for a good reason. IVF has been around for a long time, and you've likely heard of the basic concept: combining egg and sperm outside of the body to create culture. However, there is a lot more to IVF that happens before and after that.

The purpose of IVF

IVF was initially used to treat women who had blocked or lacked fallopian tubes. It now treats almost every cause of infertility. Couples with very low or absent sperm counts in the male can now conceive through IVF. IVF is usually the most effective and safest method to become pregnant if you have endometriosis, scar tissue that impacts the tubes or ovaries, or other tubal problems. When other treatment options, such as fertility drugs or insemination, fail, couples frequently turn to IVF. Preimplantation genetic diagnosis, or PGD, can be used with IVF to prevent genetic disorders.

You will be on fertility treatments during IVF to help your ovaries produce high eggs. Once the eggs have matured, they will be removed using ultrasound and fertilized in the laboratory with your partner's sperm. The fertilized eggs develop into embryos, one or more of which will be implanted in your uterus.

The IVF procedure consists of five distinct steps:

1.  Ovulation suppression

2.  Ovarian stimulations

3.  Egg retrieval

4.  Fertilization

5.  ovarian stimulations
